P1: East Timorese defied threats of violence to vote in the UN-supervised independence
referendum which could end decades of Indonesian repression.

P2: Australian drug use - including prescription medicines, illicit and legal substances -
has risen in the past decade, according to a Centre for Independent Studies report.

P3: WA Health authorities issued an urgent warning about meningococcal bacteria after a
university student and a four-year-old boy contracted the infection and died on Sunday.

WORLD: Asia's economics have rebounded from the 1997 meltdown but they need tough policies
aimed at achieving major structural reforms for a lasting recovery (Singapore). Malaysia is
celebrating its 42nd aniversary of independence with election fever in the air and the economy
rebounding from a recession (Kualu Lumpur).

FINANCE: Resources group North said the big West Angelas iron ore project in WA's Pilbara
could be up and running by late 2001 if current sales negotiations were successful. Bristile
has finally added a cash alternative to its hostile takeover bid for Wesfi in an attempt to
win over another 10 per cent of shareholders for control of the forest products company. ERG
chief executive Peter Fogarty forecast a profit of more than $25 million this financial year
because of major fare collection contracts adding to steady revenue streams in ticketing and
telecommunications manufacturing.

SPORT: AFL: West Coast and Fremantle officials hit out at the All-Australian selection
snubbing of Scott Cummings and Adrian Fletcher. West Coast veterans Peter Matera and Guy
McKenna should throw off injury concerns and play in Friday night's first qualifying final
against Western Bulldogs at the MCG.
