Vic: End in sight for disabled dispute

Carers of Victoria's intellectually disabled are optimistic six weeks of industrial
action may end on Friday.

Nearly 5,000 carers of 3,000 intellectually disabled residents in almost 500 state-run
facilities have implemented rolling stoppages and workplace bans closing up to 25 per
cent of Victoria's emergency beds.

They want the government to include minimum training standards, qualifications, career
paths and recruitment strategies in a new enterprise bargaining agreement.

The dispute was due to escalate tomorrow, but talks between the union and the government
late last night confirmed an offer.

The offer will be put to the Health and Community Services Union's number two branch
members at a series of meetings in rural Victoria tomorrow and in Melbourne on Friday.
