Sushma Swaraj hits back at Congress on Rajghat dance (Lead)

New Delhi, June. 7 -- Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sushma Swaraj Tuesday hit back at the Congress for terming her party "nachia (dancer)" over her dancing at Rajghat during a protest, saying that internet was filled with dance clippings of Congress leaders, including Indira Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi.

'We are partriotic people. We will sing and dance on patriotic numbers," Sushma Swaraj, who is the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, told reporters here.

She said that Congress leaders were first ashamed to sing 'Vande Matram' and now were making adverse comments on the singing of patriotic songs.

"I heard Digvijay Singh calling our party nachias. Manish Tewari commented on the manner, method and character of our party. I want to tell Congress leaders that the internet is filled with dance clippings of their leaders. Open the files and see on which dates Mrs. Indira Gandhi, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and Mrs. Sheila Dikshit danced," Sushma Swaraj said.

The BJP leader asked Sonia Gandhi if remarks like "nachia party" had been made with her consent. "If this is the level of Congress, I pity them," she said.

Sushma Swaraj said that party leaders Anurag Thakur, Vijay Goel were swinging to a patriotic song 'Yeh desh hai veer jawano ka (This is a country of valiant soliders)... at about 2 p.m. during the party's protest and they requested her to join them.

"I joined in spirit of camaradiere. Now making this an issue is an attempt to divert attention of people from issues of black money, corruption and abuse of civil rights at Ramlila Ground," she said.

The BJP leader said she did not need permission to dance to patriotic numbers.

"The country is free now. I do not need permission to sing and dance on patriotic numbers," she said.

She said the BJP was a party of patriotic people and its workers sing and dance on patriotic songs.

"We will sing and listen to patriotic numbers in any part of the country," she said.

Asked that the Congress had objected to dancing at Rajghat, memorial of Mahatma Gandhi, she said that the venue of party's protest was not "proper Rajghat".

"Is there a ban on singing patriotic numbers at Rajghat? If the soul of Bapu (Mahatma Gandhi) had heard that his country's people were singing the song 'Yeh desh hai veer jawano ka', his soul would be happy. What is the insult in this," she asked.

Sushma Swaraj had earlier tweeted to convey her strong disapproval of the comments of Congress leaders.
